Three weeks ago I posted a blog predicting a Trump victory in the US presidential race.
Secretly I hoped that I was wrong and in the final week, with Trump seemingly becoming more erratic and the large voter turnout (which I thought would help Harris), I thought that Kamala may actually win.
But here we are, four years of Trump in charge of the largest economy, the largest military and the largest influence on world affairs.
My initial thought, even before the election, was how can a nation vote for a person that incited a violent insurrection, where people died, in an attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government? Trump has many flaws that have been well documented but, this event should’ve disqualified him in the minds of the voters.
The fact that Trump was even in the race astounded me. The fact that it was a close race perplexed me and when he won so convincingly, I was both incredulous and dispirited.
So why did Harris perform worse than Biden in 2020? Why did Harris lose the election?
Simply put, she is a woman and the American people showed that they are not ready to elect a woman as President and Commander in Chief. That is the number one reason and arguably, the only reason.
This is borne out by the Latino vote and the young male vote. The Latino vote shifted by a huge 20 points from Biden in 2020 to Trump in 2024. Latinos tend to be socially conservative and believe in the patriarchal family unit. It’s not in their DNA to vote for a woman.
Young males are threatened by the rise of women in society including business and politics. They also can’t bring themselves to vote for a female.
Biden’s decision to renege on his promise to be a one-term transitional president didn’t help the Democratic cause either. Had he stepped aside like he said he would, the Democrats would’ve gone through the normal primary process and I bet you they would’ve selected a white man as their candidate.
Many people will say “it’s the economy stupid” or immigration & the borders. There may be some truth in that but not enough on their own to lose the election. A white male Democrat candidate would’ve been exonerated by the electorate and given another chance.
So you see, Harris was doomed from the outset because of her sex.
So why did Trump win? I don’t know. You tell me. Simple solutions to complex problems which are invariably wrong? What I do know is that Trump is a man.
One response to “The 2024 US Election”
I think it’s important to think about the context of young men and Latinos voting for trump.
I’ve heard it said a lot that young men feel disenfranchised by society, how are you meant to feel you have a place in society when typical gender roles are no longer a factor, women want to be treated as equal and leads to more completion in the workplace for jobs and in relationships to find a new dynamic where a woman gets equal say, if not more. Then not being able to live the American dream because pay conditions and debt keep you firmly at the bottom.
Then for Latinos who I wager work predominately in the labour and service industry, a removal of tax on overtime pay and tips could be an immense boon, the chance to have closer to a liveable wage and some spending money.
Then there’s the factor of lies from the right wing media, and that Democrats don’t actually meaningfully represent a difference in the economic side the socio-economic divide in the states. They still represent the top end of society and they disproportionately benefit in America. Trump simply represents a potential change, he’s not a Biden, Clinton or Bush, family’s who have dominated the political spectrum since the 1980’s.
This is a bit of a warning sign for Australia, keep allowing the disenfranchisement of young people, it breads political unrest and allows for the trumps, Scott Morrison and Boris Johnson’s of the world to step in, shake up society to benefit the capitalist of the world.
At least this is just my confetti.
